I'll toss in my US$0.02 here. The 90 Elmarit-R at f/4 gives, imho, a "look" 
in portraiture with the way the in focus subject stands out from the 
background.  The first results I got from that lens are what brought me into 
the R camp.  And, the lens is not in popular favor, so it's generally 
reasonably priced for Leica glass.

Others have mentioned the 100/2.8 APO, and I'll concur with their statements. 
 My experience with it, however,  has been almost exclusively in the macro 
mode with a 2x non APO extender.
