Graham, I am in Tina's corner as to your pictures.  They tend to be calm,
soothing, slices of the English pastoral countryside.  To add drama try
using a wider lens and using something in the near foreground that ties into
the background, that way you have a near/far relationship that adds interest
and drama.  Example's would be any of the Muench(Father or son) books or
calendars.

You can do similar things with normal to telephoto but you have to carefully
consider how the background will blur as the point of focus has to be on the
near object or it will appear that you just didn't see the blob in the
foreground.
