I'm going to assume that you are using one of the XA models as you said
"years"

If you can stand no zoom then the following have really fine optical quality
Contax T and T2
Rollei 35 especially with the 2.8 lens
Leica Minilux
Nikon 35Ti
Minolta T? the little credit card size thing with a 28mm lens
Ricoh GR1
Leica IIIc or IIIf with a 50 Elmar or the new Cosina 50mm 2.5: you know I
had to get on topic somehow.

A compact zoom
Minilux zoom
Leica C1
Canon Z115, Z135, Z155

My experience with the newer Nikon, Minolta, and Olympus compacts has been
that they are somewhat fragile and don't deliver at specific focal
length/aperture combinations.
