I think boorish people on lists offend everyone and I wouldn't think that type of behaviour drives more women off the list as compared to men. Without much authority I do think that women in the past had more exposure to photographic arts than one would first guess only because the activity of photographing the family probably was seen as women's work, the need for darkroom was a homefront activity. ernie - -----Original Message----- From: owner-leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us [mailto:owner-leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us]On Behalf Of Stuart Phillips Sent: Monday, July 29, 2002 9:25 AM To: leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us Subject: RE: [Leica] LHSA Annual Meeting; half-price membership for newLUG members! L... and Women One problem with old people in an organization is that they die. Without bringing in young(er) people, that organization also dies. I do agree though about the dangers of too deeply discounting fees. I steep rise in the second year can be disconcerting. A better plan might be a first year in two installments. Whatever. The question of lack of women on this list is interesting. 1. What percentage of professional photographers are women? 2. What percentage of "non-point-and-shoot-camera-buyers are women"? 3. What percentage of serious camera buyers are women (F5, F4, Leica, Canon etc etc howver you want to define it)? 4. What percentage of photojournalists are women? 5. How do women's incomes as professionals reflect men's (they're less even when women are allowed to hold the same job) 6. How many women's mother's had the money to buy a Leica or were encouraged to photograph - therefore how many women received a Leica from Mommy? 7. Which companies target women as consumers? Somewhere in that soup of reinforcing and conflicting trends and data, you will find the answer to the question of why this list is made up primarily of grumpy old men, with a near total absence of women. On another list, which shares at least a couple of members with this one, a woman recently had the temerity to ask about a camera she had inherited from her father, a German. Her simple, but natural question of what is a lens-hood was treated with utter contempt by at least one individual (although others were helpful). Is it any wonder that there are not many more women on these lists? L... What's wrong with old people? I have belonged to some organizations that have discounted membership fees to attract new membership. In all instances, the plan failed. Members brought in at a discount resented the second year increase and dropped out. Existing members complained and felt unfairly treated. The LHSA is a good organization from a cost benefit ratio at the present rate of dues.
