Having owned both the 90 APO and the 90 Summicron, my feeling is that if you're primarily using the 90 for portraiture, you'll ultimately be happier with the not-so-razor-sharp results produced by the last version of the pre-APO 90.

As to the 105...If I'm going to shoot with a longer lens on an M, which I'd rather not do in the first place, I sure don't want to do it with a lens that doesn't give me accurate frame lines.

But that's just me.

But B.D., then he could get the 90 APO which is a much better lens.  Or pick
up a 105 Nikor which is also a very nice lens that works full frame on the
90 frame lines at about 8 feet.  Lots of choices out there in the M system.
