just give you nothing instead of giving you "garysgarden",
but it is certainly not pulling a trick on you. If you try a
search that matches anything at all, it will give you the
results of the search that you asked for and possibly
suggest alternate spellings.

I would prefer nothing or suggestions since it makes
searching Images, Groups, and Directory very difficult - you
have to re-enter your original search.
