i was recently asked for an image by a magazine, which shall remain
nameless, and i sent a digital. i received a note from the editor saying
that they couldn't use the photo because it was digital. i responded "oh,
i'm sorry, it's just a scan of a negative. i'll send you a print." i printed
the digital on photo paper and sent it in and they published it, i'm
assuming, under the belief that it was a print from color neg.

methinks it's just a cadre of older photo-editors who are set in their ways,
use the same pool of photographers over and over, and don't read the
literature on new technolgies. they might also be used to seeing "consumer"
digital images shot at 640x480 or some such. but i think that for much of
print work even a paltry 2.1 megapixel image prints just fine. i recently
had a 1600x1200 digital image printed 16x20 after a visit to Genuine
Fractals and, although I noticed some unhappy weirdness in it, the client
did not. for the convenience of my boss calling downstairs and saying "we
need a shot of a high school student holding a pistol and we need it by
noon" there's no substitute.

now if i could just shoot my leica digital, i'd be in paradise.

kc

p.s. scratch that paradise bit, i'm already in paradise, the digital m would
just be a perk.
