Hi Aram, the profit would be in selling a new chip and the technical time to
install it.  It probably can not be done at a reasonable price because each
chip as a unique signature that the underlying programming manipulates into
an image.  So to make this idea work there would also have to be a method of
changing the programming at the same time.

Another design consideration would be the angle of the light rays coming in
from the lens so that the outer pixels saw the incoming light or could be
compensated for with the processing algorithms.  This might be one
difficulty facing the Foveon chip as the depth of the chip might limit lens
choice.

Last, the manufacturers would have to come up with a non-proprietary socket
to change the imaging chip into and out of.
