Long-haul Amtrak sucks grapes, that's for sure. On the other hand the
Bos-Wash corridor trains are routinely on-time (not today, my son was stuck
in New London, on his way to DC, for 4 hours because of some event no one
could explain) but in general I'd rather take the train from DC to NYC or
from Philly to Boston than fly. Good seats, leg room, comfort.

Here in California the trains that run Sacramento to San Jose are heavily
used, are on time, and let me read the paper or work on my computer or just
sleep.

They don't x-ray film either.

I'd rather lay naked in the sun for two days than take Amtrak across the
country.
