Subject: RE: [Leica] airport security kinda long. ;-)

We do indeed have to deal with it. I had two major
points, maybe I didn't make them effectively in my
original post.

1. The process for deciding who, what and how to check
is ineffective at best. We shouldn't be leaving it to
the poorly paid and trained security staff to pick
people out, and clearly not looking in Xray proof bags
is nuts. I could have been carrying anything in them.
And profiling SHOULD be a PART of what we do...not the
only part. But to say we shouldn't profile travelers
with passports from the Middle East is pretty stupid.

2. The changes at the airports have had a financial
impact because of the slow down and inconvenience. So
for a trip from Philadelphia to Boston in the past I
would have flown...now I wouldn't even consider it. To
fly I spend an hour getting to the airport, arrive two
hours early to make the flight, fly for an hour, and
spend an hour getting my bags and getting through the
tunnel in Boston...total time 5 hours. I can drive it
in 6. I know this choice is made daily by many
travelers.

I think we all agree that we will do what is necessary
to add to secure travel for people on the planes and
on the ground. I for one would feel better about it if
I felt the extra precautions were well thought through
and making a difference.
