One difference is the spot metering field on the R8 is so well-defined by the circle in the viewfinder. At any rate, it's results that count, and I always enjoy yours. Here is what Leica says: "The camera measures the light reflected by a white spot in the center of the first shutter curtain. That spot has a diameter of 12 mm and it covers approx. 13% of the full film format." I just try to put that 13% in the center on something that is about photo-gray. The meter on the M6's and 7's does seem to be more affected by back light than the meter on the R's. Even if the bright light is outside of the 13% center, it seems to affect the exposure. I might be wrong, but that's the way it seems to work for me.
