So assuming that my own setup is the lowest common denominator, I always size my pictures so that they are 750 pixels across for horizontal shots (the height then falls somewhere around 500), or 600 pixels tall for vertical shots (resulting in a width of about 400). This leaves just sufficient space for the browser menus at the top and on the left and does not force the viewer to scroll around the image.
