This just shows how much personal taste has to do with everything in
photography -

Image size apart - as it's utterly irrelevant to the critique of the photo:

I thing that what Nathan describes as 'dead space' is part of what makes
this photo interesting - it sends the message that individuals are isolated
in the city;

The partial circle of the trashcan in the lower right works together with
the manhole cover in the middle foreground;

The nose of the car coming in from the left, pointing toward the man
crossing the street, creates an interesting sense of foreboding;

The piece of street lamp in the upper right corner balances nicely with the
aforementioned trash can in the lower left;

I agree that the bottom of the lamp post on the right would disappear were
this a perfect world, but cropping it would mean cutting into the top part
of the lamp, and, even worse, it would mean cutting into the shadow of the
man crossing the street. The solution to this problem would have been to
compose very slightly differently.

All in all, an interesting image.
