That's absolutely dead-on true, Neil. But if the photographer, rather than
the viewer, says "this photo shows blah blah blah," the photo fails if the
viewer can't look at the photo and see "blah blah blah." If the photographer
simply says "here are photos I took in the city," then the photos succeed as
photos of the city - and the VIEWER can read anything into them he or she
chooses.

Sorry Ted but I disagree.  I think the beauty of really good art,
photographic or otherwise, is that it allows room for the viewer to provide
his or her own interpretation.  The very best photographs always leave you
asking questions.
