I'm taking some B&W film to Yellowstone in a couple weeks; where a color filter will enhance the effect I want, I'll use it, otherwise no. For protection, I keep flying rocks away from the camera and never point the camera up when a flock of gulls is overhead. I've never figured out how to keep shards of broken filters away from the front element so I don't use filters for protection.
