Doug got the technical part of this right; patterns stored in memory and
compared to what is measured.  For average pictures the matrix metering will
give you a good exposure.  In all cases you will get an image that is
something.  For standard backlit scenes or sunsets they will do a very good
job.  Especially using fill flash where the foreground exposure is provided
they do an excellent job.

The real trick is to decide what is important to you and expose for that.
Many times the metered exposure will give you something other than what
attracted you to the scene in the first place.  So for the last five percent
of creativity you still have to consult the oracle in your head.
