It's my experience that many people today buy products based on the ads
they see and hear without giving much attention to the more important
details -- will it do the job; will it give me acceptable results; is it
repairable, and, if so, can I expect good service? Etc. Etc. They see
something that looks good and then go out and find the cheapest price.

The fact this man didn't think ahead or do some research is not unusual.
As for getting good information about a product, even from a dealer more
advanced than a "warehouse" store, that is often problematic. After
having done my research, I have often shopped for an item in upscale
dealer stores where you would expect to get expert advice only to find
that I had more knowledge than the sales person.

I guess it is a matter of buyer beware and, if all else fails, read the
instruction manual, hopefully before using the product.
