Mildew thrives in damp environments.
Where possible avoid such storage, when not, use desiccant to prevent
moisture from accumulating.

To remove the musty odor, make a very mild solution of water and bleach
(50:1). Wipe the equipment with a rag impregnated with it. Obviously avoid
wiping the glass elements. Allow to sit in a well ventilated area.
To clean the glass itself, use ClearSight lens cleaner, it contains its own
anti fungal agent
