I think that the images shown have weaknesses that have less to do with using the DOF preview and more to do with you slowing down a little and thinking about what you want to show. For example: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=714431 This is an image that is less a flower and more an abstract. Look at the image and imagine it cropped as a strong horizontal eliminating the stamen and what is above the blossom. Now you have a strong abstract of form and color. Or, this image: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=714442 I think all it needs is a slight re-framing to move the mass of the flower up and to the right some. This takes advantage of the diagonal of the stem and moves the mass of the image a little higher which I think would be more interesting. Add a little dew and some cross lighting and this would be a very nice shot indeed. This one: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=714448&size=lg demonstrates a good eye for the light striking the flower but is probably shot too wide if your intention is an "art" shot. As a record shot it does quite well. Look at the image and imagine a vertical with the right edge just past the right side of the "sex organs"and the left just at the tip of the petals on the left. Now the diagonal lighting makes a great shot. You are more than 90 percent there, slow down a bit and try more angles of each shot. While you are doing that, try different apertures and very soon you will know what your lens will do at a variety of apertures and thus will have more tools at your disposal.
