I wouldn't worry about the US. No one gets stopped
for camera equipment, even a suitcase full unless 
it's a suitcase full of mint boxed wrapped equipment.
They know what to look for.
You may however want to be careful in other places
where local customs officials like to excersize their
authority on unsuspecting travelers. At this point 
credentials indicating that you are working on
something usually do the trick.
