People write things on this mailing list that they would NEVER say in person.
They don't appear to realize the effect their words can have on others - or
perhaps since they don't have to deal with the consequences personally they
just
don't care. It's not just this list, it's common on virtually every internet
forum I've encountered. People just cannot take a few moments to ponder what
they write.

Erwin was hit pretty hard here over his M7 review, much harder than he should
have. It's not that the questions were bad - it's the form they took which
seemed personal to me.

Personally I'm surprised he even wanted to take the time to write his
newsletter
- - who would want to open themselves to such bad treatment, esp when the only
thing driving them is their own passion and desire to share their
understanding?

Adam,

To be sure, the internet psychopathology is to blame. Let's face it, it's
easier (and safer) to be an ass to someone online than to their face. I've
seen huge spats on the LUG, but to me, this group started getting
particularly, increasingly nasty after the events of 9/11. Maybe it's some
sort of collective post-traumatic stress disorder working it's way through
the list.

Most of the time when I read particularly snotty remarks by folks on the LUG
I just figure that some guy's Viagra isn't working so well, and that's what's
making him particularly ornery towards others.

I would like it if folks generally stayed ontopic and respectful, but I've
been guilty of violating both of those sentiments more than a few occasions.
I've been called on it, and called others on it and perhaps that's the best
we can do. The members of the LUG are a community of sorts and community
viewpoint has a lot to do with shaping the content of online dialogue.

My only other wish is that all of the online lawyers and consumer advocates
will once they're done investigating Erwin Putts nefarious links to Leica,
might add their respective skills to any number of scandals out there in the
real world that are waiting for honest investigation and god-forbid reporting.
