One of the biggest problems is the extreme density range in this photo, exacerbated by the Kodachrome film (love that film, hate to scan it). This photo has lots of subtle highlight details, and at the same time there has to be enough tonal separation in the dark areas to see the bill and legs. Unless the scanner can handle a density range greater than the slide, some tones will be lost at one end of the scale or the other; with this photo the extremes are vital. Using the Photosmart scanner, the bird comes out a legless, beak-less white blob against background noise. Another problem is the extremely fine detail of the white plumes against the dark background. Many scanners have tried (and failed) to record the detail of the plumes without bleeding the bright white into the background.
