The 80 is a very sharp lens.  The only way it could be seen as soft is that 
wide open the depth of field is very shallow.  Focus on the eyelashes and 
the nose will be soft.  I like that degree of control in a portrait lens, 
though.  Stopped down it is a sharp as any other Leica lens.  Maybe you 
could rent one and try it out first.
