The "Stars" are all 7th or 8th graders. There are anywhere from 40-50 of them. I do an individual portrait of each, they eat Pizza and then I do a group photo. The individual photos are inside and the group may be inside or outside depending on the weather. The group shot is don at about 11:30AM and if outdoors, facing the sun. The whole job is done in about 25 minutes. No flash and no tripods. The individuals are placed in front of a projection screen. I put a small piece of yellow gaffer tape on the floor to mark the spot where they will stand. I use an M (usually an M6), 75 Summilux and Fuji 800 negative film. I overexpose by about a half stop. The group shot is done very quickly with a 28 Elmarit. If the weather is nice it is done outside in a concrete courtyard. It makes a nice reflector to fill in around the eyes. I DO attempt arrange the students. I hold my arms outstretched approximating the angle of the lens's coverage and tell them "tall ones in back, short ones in front. I stand on a low bench and tell them, " I will count to three. When I say three, I will take the picture. Be sure your eyes are open and your fingers are not in your noses." I then count and actually take shot on about 2 1/2. I then take another, this time on three after reminding them of the count. That's it. No muss, no fuss.
