Details are available from the New York Times on-line edition. Carl and Shelly Mydans, then newly-weds, were present in Manila when the Japanese captured the town and spent two years in captivity before being exchanged. Carl Mydans went on to a distinguished career as Douglas MacArthur's favorite photographer and as the first senior photographer to adopt Nikon gear as the standard.
