I shot for them over a period of 8-9 years, maybe 10, I can't quite recall. Even tried leaving once, but the cads just reeled me back in by doubling what they were originally paying me. Worse, I was paid as I laid the assignment on the desk, before I even left the offices. Again those cads, engorged as they were on that good wholesome Reagan era money. One of the things I had to do was to photograph happy car dealership customers in their homes with their favorite pastimes. They used to call that a hobby, a common activity within the working class, aka middle class, at one time. Over that whole period, intriguingly enough, I went from photographing people that had hobbies to just photographing them at work, or the parking lot at work, or their driveway at home. Not only did the_average_person not have any time for them, as they were always at work, but many could no longer afford them. I have over a thousand portraits like that, which show the slippage that was taking place. More than 90% of it was done with 120, of course, as I thought even then that there might a historical element to it. Now, although originally a commercial job, it's a telling essay of the era, or better yet, an age, compressed in the space of a decade. Since I was working to just turn the stuff out, I need to go back and check for proper fixing and washing before I do something with them. Now that you've reminded me of it, I think I'll beat the bushes with the essay and see what happens.
