D. Yes I agree with you that an electronic shutter could be easily controlled to "stay out of the way." To add digital to an existing camera, all of the electronics would have to reside with the sensor, I suspect in a replaceable M back door. A data bus would have to be present in order to control the shutter from the back. The back would be relatively thick as the amount of electronics needed to control a digital sensor, readout the data, do appropriate interpolation, conversion, JPEGging, etc, would be substantial. Also, the shutter release and shutter dial would have to be transferred to the back via the bus as well. And the back would have to accommodate a storage device of some sort. Smart card? PCMCIA? Compact Flash? Memory Stick? ...something. Big bump. Like a Mobile home with an expandable (bump out) room. Might be in the way of your cheek bone when looking through the viewfinder.
