Well, they generally hold the strap to the camera too, which is a good 
thing.  Leica puts nice little bumpers on the vulnerable spot, and I 
find some moleskin helps preserve the finish too.

Seriously, it is easy to make a little leather or moleskin 'pouchlet' to 
protect the camera from brassing, but I have found the Leica bumper 
prevents the same.  And, the camera is at more risk with no strap, at 
least for me.
