I had the same thing happen in the Gap some time back. Store displays and layouts and decor is really considered part of what the store 'owns' and they don't like it being shot. You could try explaining you are shooting people, not the store. It could work. In my case I was shooting a stack of jeans so I really couldn't get away with denying anything...................
