I like your images and the potential that is here.

Your alternatives seem stronger than the main picture, especially the ones
working the shopping carts in the rain.  Look at cropping in the first image
to give more room for the carts to move into, and in the second possibly
some of the space on either side and in front to focus the viewer onto the
customer head bowed into the rain coming into the store.

The main picture is a good situation.  I think you could try chatting up
people without a camera to get comfortable with talking to strangers.
Almost always, if you have something relevant to say, people will talk with
you; and with some pretext let you take their picture.  So, if you had: then
shot from their face side getting some expression on their discussion of
what hair color to get.
