My favorite local camera store is staffed with patient, knowledgeable folks - the owners actually. They are always trying to sell me the latest of their products. I don't know if it's because I'm a professional ( not in photography) and they think I have much extra disposable $ or is because they HAVE seen me in action buying stuff that makes no sense? Will never know but then again no one is holding a gun to my head to go into the place. In fact I often use the excuse that I need more fixer, etc to pay a visit. :) well today it's actualy both more fixer and hypoclearing stuff :) ernie nitka http://home.twcny.rr.com/nitka - -----Original Message----- From: owner-leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us [mailto:owner-leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us]On Behalf Of B. I know I am viewed as a 'bit' of a raving wildman at times - well, probably quite often. But given all the thrashing about at one point or another about commercialism on the LUG, about Ebay, etc., I don't know that my response to Nigel's sales pitch was at all out of line. No, he didn't say "I am selling R8s and this is the price." Instead, he set up a strawman, knocked it down, and left the R8 standing. This wasn't you making the comparison, or some other LUGer with no financial interest in the outcome of the comparison' this was a DEALER - someone whose meals and rent/mortgage depend upon the number of Leica cameras he sells. So should a LUGer - including a dealer - respond off-list to someone who expresses interest in perhaps purchasing a particular lens? Why not. Let's just skip the on-line not-very-subliminal sales pitches. And, BTW, I have nothing against Nigel. I don't know Nigel. I assume Nigel is a great guy personally and a great guy to do business with. B. Would it be shameful for someone also on the list to contact that person by private email and offer to sell them that very item? ernie Subject: RE: [Leica] Leica R8 vs. Nikon D1x OF course Nigel should stay - what shouldn't stay are blatant ads in the guise of friendly advice. ;-) B.
