I've found that symbolism works best when sitting around pipe-smoking and
blowing smoke rings long after the picture was exposed.  Maybe after a few
brandies, too.  :)

That's not commenting on whether your attempt at symbolism worked.  I don't
know.  I don't see much symbolism until after I've knocked back a few.
