The 35mm reels have two prongs onto which you can hook the perforations in
35mm film.  Trimming the film in the dark is hardly a chore but, at the
same time, is not necessary, as you can do this in the light -- there is a
fairly long leader on 35mm film which can be light-struck without a concern.

120 and 127 reels have regular clips.
