I have always tried to shoot with available light. And for the 35 years or so when I was shooting for my own pleasure, I hardly ever touched a flash. If I couldn't get the shot hand-holding the camera at a 1/15th, 1/8th, 1/4, or even half a second, I just didn't take the shot. And if I did hand-hold and it was blurred a bit, well, so what? If the image made me happy, that was all that mattered. But then comes the issue of shooting for other people - clients - who are paying quite considerable amounts of money for the photos I am shooting. Sure, given the kind of work I do, I can still include some images shot at a 15th of a second. But the bottom line is that I no longer have the option of not getting the shot. And if getting it means using flash - hopefully fill flash - then that's what I use. I don't like using it. I'm not particularly comfortable using it. It doesn't really fit with my style of shooting. But the bottom line is what counts. Therefore - if Leica, upon whose Ms I depend for most of my shooting, modify the M, or give me an add-on flash, that will allow me to be as comfortable using flash when I have to use it as I am using available light, I say 'right on!'
