The biggest problem with the Passport warranty is that it excludes any loss in which the remains of the camera or lens containing the serial number cannot be recovered. This includes what is probably the biggest risk to cameras, theft. The Passport also excludes fire damage. For non-professionals, an all-risk rider to an existing homeowner's insurance policy can usually provide much better coverage. If you rely only on Passport coverage, you are not very well protected against loss. It is not exactly true that if you buy grey market you don't have a warranty. You won't have a warranty provided by Leica. But there are many dealers who will provide their own warranty for grey market merchandise. They are unlikely to cover mistreatment a la Passport, but coupled with good insurance coverage and provided by a reputable dealer you should be quite well protected. There are many sources of repair for Leicas other than Leica USA or Leica Germany. Bryan Caldwell - -- To unsubscribe, see http://mejac.palo-alto.ca.us/leica-users/unsub.html
