Have you already looked at CCAC here in Oaklnd, the photojournalism school at UCBerkeley? (Ken Light is the contact there). I can put you in touch with a Sac State grad if you like. If photojournalism interests you, I also have a friend who bought a police scanner for Alameda County and just started rushing off whenever anything happened. It wasn't long before he was on staff for 2 papers. And don't forget Duke University in South Carolina. The printer in Sacramento that I gave you also mentored a young friend of mine for a year...you might ask him if needs an assistant...he would rather train you than get someone with "different " technique. As I said before, if you have the chance he is worth it. I did enough university for medicine and I taught myself the photography, with a couple of classes and a lot of study. It probably cost as much as going to Univ. but I did get to do what I wanted to do. I also have a good library if you would like to browse.
