If you believe this, you either haven't been in the industry very long, and/or are believing revisionist history of the actual events. If you consider telling computer resellers that if they sell any other OS but your OS, they "may" have supply problems...as well as requiring the reseller to buy one of your licenses for EVERY CPU you sell, or you won't sell them any. Typically, these tactics are considered illegal, not "proper marketing". Are MS purposely wrote their code so other manufacturers products would not work. A slogan I used to hear was "DOS ain't done until Lotus won't run". MSDOS was NOT a better idea, it's simply been a ball and chain for the computer industry for over 10 years. The fact is, MS didn't even write DOS, they bought it from someone else, and lied to IBM that they even had any OS experience, much less had an OS. What MS has been doing has been playing catch-up with the rest of the industry, and only recently, have they actually had a somewhat usable product. MS has NEVER come up with a new product/idea on their own. EVERY product/idea they have is a clone of someone else's.
