Formerly I used Kodak photo CD and the nikon blows those scans away. I've never seen sharper images- it compares with the best drum scans. But I do use a Wess duping mount to hold my slides, it's rigid and has a wider aperature than normal mounts, so I get the entire image. As far as shadow detail, if you adjust the curves in the histogram, I pull out detain that I can barely see with a loupe on the light box. I don't use ICE, as it softens the image and slows down the scanning quite a bit, invest in a good brush and some compresed air.
