Also if you really want to learn you shouldn't use a P&S camera. You can
apply the rule of thirds but little else because it does everything else for
you.

Because your on THIS list I'll say find a second hand LEICA. But in reality
buy a used manual focus body and fixed 50/35mm lens. If you don't want to
spend a lot until your sure you like photography you shouldn't have to spend
more than $100-150 on a older used body & lens. If you have $$ to spend
that's another issue that I won't get into. Just my .02
