I disagree. Email is causing a much higher percentage of informal communication to be saved. It may require tremendous compute power for historians of the future to find anything, but if it was ever sent in email, it will be out there somewhere.

I have not deleted an email message that was addressed to me since 1978. I have every message I've sent since then, every message anybody has sent me since then, every message that my family members have sent to each other, and so on and so on. 

My life isn't worth the attention of a historian, but if it were, there'd be lots of material available.
