My guess is that you were in TTL mode so the camera/flash combo set the
correct flash exposure and you had set your camera for correct ambient light
exposure.  If you were in the aperture mode then the areas reached by the
flash would have been 2 stops over and looked a lot like a cheap P/S; of
course if you were shooting color neg and had a mini-lab print it the key
would be a very dark background.
