French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu notes that most traditional photography
constitutes an "institutional piety" that serves to integrate groups within
society. This ranges from family snapshots to wedding photography and even
photojournalism.
That's the reason that photography "so rarely fulfils a properly
aesthetic function, and why properly artistic ambition is encountered
particularly among those individuals or social catagories most throughly
freed from traditional functions."
