The highlights/whites look blown out on my IBM laptop screen but the actual
colours are not too bad.

To me it looks more like the results of "high noon" lighting. A bright sun
directly overhead.

Do your slides/prints/negs (whatever you are scanning) look good?

Also, what scanner are you using? Some scanners just can't handle high
contrast negs/slides as well as others.

To isolate the problem I'd start by setting your monitor Gamma to 2.2 or
1.8. A "basic" standard for most monitors under standard office lighting
conditions. They just try to match what is on your screen with the original.

The type and intensity of light falling on your screen will effect how you
see the image also.
Try it again with the lights in the office turned down or directed away
from the monitor.

I would suggest that the problem is not with the monitor settings, but the
scan or original.

In 20 years I have rarely had to mess with monitor settings beyond the
defaults.
Only in extreme lighting conditions.

The questions I would be asking are....

What film were you using?
Did you scan slides, negs or prints?
What scanner are you using?
What are your scanner settings?
What time of day and lighting conditions when photos shot?
