Mikko,

The effect is definitely not by design, and I hate it. I cleaned the
scanner lens with a cotton swab tonight and hope that it helps. Otherwise,
I will have to use Mark's more radical suggestion and actually take the
scanner apart to give the innards a more thorough cleaning.
