In my opinion the best thing to visit in Washington, by far, is the FDR memorial.
I lived in Washington for 20 years and I've been back dozens of times, both on business and with student groups. The FDR memorial hadn't been built yet when I lived there, so I didn't really know about it until an organized trip took me there. I was spellbound.

I like the walk up 14th Street, from Thomas Circle to Irving Street. Not for the faint of heart (it's what some people would call a 'bad neighborhood') but it always makes me happy every time I walk it. About 10 years ago I did this walk on New Year's Eve. What a thrill.
