Rechargable NiCad and NiMH batteries both have high "self discharge rates". NiMH are usually worse than NiCads in this respect although they have higher energy densities. You can do a search on the web if you are interested in this. So your problem may have nothing to do with your R8. If this is a problem for you, you can always use non rechargeable alkalines or the nominal 1.5V AA lithiums.
