One of the nice possible benefits of converting an M3 to the M2 long shaft (to take
the Leicavit MP or M2-type Rapidwinder) is that you can also convert the camera to
auto-reset frame counter when the baseplate or winder is removed. This is achieved by
using the load spool/shaft assembly used in the M4-M and M4-MOT, in tandem with the
prong that sticks out the camera bottom (with baseplate removed) which links to the
counter assembly. You will not obtain this advantage by simply converting the M3 to
the M2 shaft with detachable spool or by installing the M4-2 type motor coupling
which will work with Tom's standard Rapidwinder. If you really want rapid, go all
the way.

The M4-M/MOT parts are also a smart choice if you want to use the aforementioned
winders on M4 cameras.

One can also obtain both rapid loading and the long shaft on the M2 in this way,
although there will not be any frame counter change as the M2 counter is external and
must be manually reset.

Leica and some of our friendly independent repair types may still have these parts.
