I do own two flashes, a Metz for my R8 and the little SF20 for my M6. But I rarely use them, I regard them as emergency devices exactly for the reasons you mention. As for the IR landscape, I agree with your comment. In fact, I took 3-4 shots of the scene, and on a couple of them the composition is exactly as you suggest. But I chose this particular one because the sky is not completely blown out and the flare is not too bad, considering that I used a filter (Heliopan 695).
