It does have 2 focus zones underwater and when snorkling is much eaiser to deal with than the Nikonos. Weight and bulk are the big issues I found. Divers have so much weight and bulk adding the Nikonos hardly matters ;-) You cannot turn off the AF but above water you can turn off flash or flash on always. I am surprised that Nikon discontinued the Nikonos. I think it is a very popular dive camera.
