Acid!" ??.... This is what I ran into coming back from Guatemala. They took my camera batteries at the x-ray machine and Continental boxed them up to be sent as checked luggage. I think it is possible to build a simple bomb with batteries (?). I've also heard that the FAA is currently requiring everything to be sent through x-ray - nothing passed around. This was on PhotoPro, but when I came through Houston, they were still willing to pass film around. What I do when I'm traveling where they may not allow film to be passed around is to carry lead-lined bags in my carry-on and, when refused hand-inspection, put the film in the lead-lined bags and send it through the machine. They can't see through the lead-lined bags (no, it is not possible for them to turn up the power) so they hand-inspect the film - which is what you wanted in the first place. The best advice is to get there very early and plan to be patient and courteous.
